Halifax East Fisheries Association is dedicated to initiatives that will advance the fishing industry for fishers on the Eastern Shore and surrounding areas. We are presently dealing with 2 issues:
Marine Protected Areas – We do not support Marine Protected Areas without proper scientific assessment and broad community support. We feel that sustainably managed oceans are protected oceans and that the Government of Canada can apply all of its many acts to ensure the protection of its Oceans without the need for new and redundant regulation.
Seal Harvest – We support the introduction of a seal harvest that will control the largest consumer of fish in Atlantic Canadian waters. While the fishing industry is always paying the price for declining stocks by sacrificing quota, nothing has been done to reduce the burden of an exploding seal population. The system is unbalanced and any quota that the fishing industry gives up is quickly consumed by the growing seal population. The ecosystem must be brought back into balance.
Aquaculture – We do not support open pen fish farming. However, we have fished alongside many aquaculture operations for decades. There are mussels and oysters farmed on our shores.
